The question of what to do with the massive Land O’ Lakes sinkhole is finally being answered.

The sinkhole destroyed two homes last July and made several around them unlivable.

After months of debate and community meetings, Pasco County officials have made a decision on what to do.

Commissioners voted on Tuesday to go with the “T-turn” option, which will slightly extend the road on either side of the hole on Ocean Pines Drive.

Commissioner Mike Moore says it will give cars and trucks a place to turn around on the road, which has been a problem for neighbors living right against the hole.

“One of the biggest concerns were people having to turn around in their driveways,” Moore said. “People turning around in their yards. It’s obviously a nuisance for them and not a good quality of life.”

In addition to the “T-turns,” a new metal fence will replace the chain link fence there now.

According to a county staff presentation, the proposed changes cost $240,000. Commissioners approved the funding.

Neighbors say it’s a start.

“That’s the best news I’ve heard in a long while. I’m sick of people turning around in my yard,” Ralph Terry said.

The “T-turns” and fence were chosen from several options, which included making the hole a cul-de-sac or rebuilding the road, which were both deemed to be too risky and expensive.

The county hopes to move as quickly as possible on the changes, and will continue to look at other options with the sinkhole as well.
