Investigators say a 22-year-old man shot and killed his grandmother and great-grandmother just hours after the two women returned from a church service.

A third woman was also shot in the face.

The woman and her 8-year-old son ran for their lives to a neighbor's home.

Deputies said they were called to a home in the 15600 block of Southwest 19th Avenue Road for the report of a shooting early Sunday morning.

"To do something like that to two people who can't defend themselves is very horrific," said neighbor Krista Gomez.

Azael Stevens, the man deputies say shot and killed his grandmother and great-grandmother, turned 22 years old just the day before.

At the scene, grieving family members and church members couldn't believe the tragic news.

The two women were from Panama and raised Stevens.

"He wasn't a bad kid. He was just mixed up man," said George Osorio, a family friend.

Neighbors said the 22-year-old was mixed up with the wrong crowd since 2006 when his violent criminal history started and he had actually just gotten out of jail.

"I saw when he got here, they just embraced him and let him know they still loved him," said Steve Johnson, who called 911 about the shooting earlier.

Around 1:30 a.m., Stevens turned on his grandmothers, investigators said.

Marion County Sheriff's officials said he shot one of the women while she was sitting in a recliner and the other while she was on the couch.

According to detectives, a woman living at the home with her 8-year-old son was shot in the face after she gave Stevens the keys to her car, then she and her son ran for their lives to their neighbor's home.

"We just opened the door and let them in because the boy was afraid," said Johnson.

Johnson called 911 and 20 minutes later, Stevens was in custody facing felony murder charges.

"Deep down inside I kind of feel sorry for him. But for the actions taken, he deserves what he gets," said Gomez.

The woman who was shot in the face was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainsville.

Deputies say she is expected to be okay.

Stevens will face a judge Monday morning.
