Twitter has confirmed a server issue in what, hopefully, is not a sign of things to come during the social media frenzy that will be the upcoming Super Bowl weekend.

The social media website appeared to be back up as of 11 a.m., about an hour after users first noticed the outage and the now-familiar "fail whale" image.

A post on Twitter's Status Blog at 10:28 a.m. confirmed:

"Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue."

Twitter later added:

"We experienced intermittent issues affecting Web and mobile users, globally, between approximately 7:00am and 9:50am PST [10 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. EST].

This incident has now been resolved. We apologize to users who were affected by this, and we’re working to ensure that similar issues do not occur."

The third-party website Is It Down Right Now reported around 10 a.m. that "Twitter is DOWN for everyone. It is not just you. The server is not responding."

Twitter did not immediately indicate the cause of the outage, but it likely to make advertisers pushing football fans to use their mobile devices as a "second screen" during Super Bowl commercials a bit nervous.
