The Palm Bay police department did get approval for some extra eyes to help them fight crime.

The police department was hoping the city council would sign off Thursday night on the purchase of 51 body cameras, and the council did.

The department will use use a $42,000 federal grant to purchase the cameras, which will outfit about half of their patrol operations.

Police say the body cameras and microphones are becoming valuable tools to capture interactions between police and the public.

"It gives accountability and at the same time provides evidence for court, and allows the citizens who are our jury  to see what the officers deal with on a a daily basis, when something does go court, the citizen is almost right there with him, like a television show," said Captain John Resh, Palm Bay Police.

The Cocoa Police department also using body cameras in Brevard County.

They purchased 6 back in November, and just requested 30 more.
