American intelligence officials could be one step closer to finding a man, or the men, responsible for killing two American journalists and a British aid worker.

Thursday, FBI Director James Comey said the U.S. believes it has identified the militant of the Islamic State terrorist group, also called ISIS or ISIL, who was recently speaking in the execution videos of those three men.

The FBI isn't publicly identifying the militant. Officials aren't saying if the man murdered the two American journalists or the British aid worker.

From the videos, the militant was dressed head-to-toe in black and stood next to the three men who lost their lives on these horrific videos. Officials said he has a British accent.

American journalist James Foley's execution video was released Aug. 19. He disappeared on Nov. 22, 2012, in Northwest Syria, near the Turkish border.

Steven Sotloff, a former University of Central Florida student and another American journalist, was shown being executed in a video the Islamic State released Sept. 2. Sotloff disappeared in August 2013 while he was reporting in Syria.

After Sotloff's execution video was made public, the execution tape showing the last living moments of British aid worker David Haines was released Sept. 13. Haines was abducted in March 2013 near a refugee camp in Syria. He was working to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian aid to refugees at the camp.

The execution videos do not show the slayings in their entirety and pictures fade to black. Officials said they cannot be sure to know who killed the three men based on the videos.

The same man is believed to be standing next to all three men just minutes before they died.
