An elderly patient with dementia was found with a gun at Florida Hospital East in Orlando during the early-morning hours on Friday, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, adding that a lockdown was issued for the hospital.

The lockdown has since been lifted.

  • No one was injured during the incident
  • Patient surrendered without incident, deputies say

Just after 2 a.m., there was a heavy law enforcement presence outside of the hospital, where the sheriff's office told News 13 that it found an elderly patient in the hallway with a firearm.

Deputies said the patient was in the hospital with dementia and threatened to harm himself.

However, he eventually did surrender to deputies without incident and was taken into custody, but he is being treated at the hospital with deputies, officials said.

"By the time we got there the individual had put the firearm down prior to us getting there. The elderly gentleman had the firearm, was waving it around and making threats against himself. He never threatened anyone else or any deputies," said Jeff Williamson, public information officer with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

It was not determined what type of firearm the man had.
