The tone for the upset was set on the first play of the game, as Largo fumbled on the opening kickoff, giving Armwood a short field and an eventual 3-0 lead.

It would be mostly downhill from there for the Packers, as four first half turnovers led to a 10-0 halftime advantage for the Hawks, and Armwood (8-3) spoiled the undefeated regular season that Largo racked up in a 10-6 road win in the Class 6A regional quarterfinal televised live by Bright House Sports Network.

The Packers (10-1) were their own worst enemy by turning the ball over seven times in front of a stunned home crowd that hoped Largo would become the first team from Pinellas County to ever win a FHSAA state football championship.

In the second quarter, Reggie Moore caught a pass and then fumbled without being touched. Jordan Griffin picked up the loose ball and scurried 17 yards into the end zone for the touchdown that would make it 10-0 in favor of Armwood. The Hawks also forced a fumble as the Packers were only a yard away from scoring a touchdown with a minute to play in the first half.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter, and it remained that way until midway through the fourth, when Moore atoned for his error in the second quarter by returning a punt back 86 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to 10-6, but the Hawks were able to block the extra point try.

Largo recovered an onside kick following the touchdown, but were unable to take advantage on the ensuing drive. They had the ball on their own 39-yard line in the final minute of the game, but Doss could not hang on to a pitch on a hook and lateral play and the fumble was recovered by Armwood to effectively end the game.

Besides being the beneficiary of seven turnovers, Armwood also blocked a field goal attempt to go along with the point-after block that kept a potential four points off the board for the Packers.

The Hawks, after having their 2011 Class 6A state title stripped by the FHSAA for using ineligible players, found themselves in the unfamiliar spot of road underdog in the opening round, but they showed that on the field, they are the defending state champions by defeating Largo in a game that didn't feature an offensive touchdown and every point mattered.

Armwood will take on Hillsborough in the regional semifinals next Friday.
