After an in-home visit with Louisville tight ends coach Sherrone Moore on Tuesday, Tampa Bay Tech wide receiver Richard Benjamin made it official. The four-star athlete committed to the Cardinals, Titans head coach Jayson Roberts confirmed to BHSN.

Benjamin will make his commitment to head coach Charlie Strong and the Cards official this weekend during a visit to the university.

"He felt, and I agree with him, that (Louisville) is probably going to be the best fit for him," Roberts said in a phone interview. "He couldn't ask for more of an up-and-coming team, a team that's getting ready to be in the [Atlantic Coast Conference] the year after next and is getting ready to be in the Sugar Bowl this year...so I think it's a great opportunity for Richard."

Benjamin's commitment comes less than a week after Strong turned down several head coaching positions to stay with the Cardinals. Benjamin's ability to make an immediate impact was one of the biggest factors in his decision, according to Roberts.

"That's one of the things that I think is appealing to him, is that they are recruiting him as an athlete," Roberts said. "They definitely believe that he can come in and play right away, especially because they don't have anybody in the secondary as big and physical as he is or can play the ball as well as he does."

Roberts believes he'll be a two-way player for the Cards. As for his pledge, Jody Demling of Scout.com tweeted Louisville did not receive an official commit Tuesday night, but Roberts confirmed to BHSN that Benjamin did in fact commit to the Cards, but coaches want him to keep it quiet until he meets with Strong over the weekend.

"I'm sure (Richard) is already putting that out on twitter even though when he committed to them tonight the coaches told him to not make it so public until he comes on his official visit this Friday," Roberts said. "He wants to make sure everything he's telling them, he can tell to coach Strong face to face."

Benjamin did not return phone calls from BHSN.

Over the summer, several schools pulled their offers to Benjamin because he had become out of shape and didn't perform well at off-season workouts. The Titans star athlete then gave a verbal commitment to UCF back in July at the Bright House Sports Network studios, but de-committed a month later to explore his options.

He chose the Cardinals over offers from Purdue, Texas A&M and West Virginia, among others.

"I think, going forward, it's going to be an invaluable lesson that he went through this experience during the recruiting process," Roberts said. "Richard will tell you himself that he kind of got a little complacent...and I think that played a large part in some of the schools backing away from him. That kind of drove him this season, and during the year he played with a chip on his shoulder."

Benjamin had 718 yards rushing and 509 yards receiving this past season, to go along with 11 touchdowns (5 rush, 6 rec). He also had 4 interceptions.

Tampa Bay Tech finished the season at 7-4, losing to Durant in the 7A Regional Quarterfinals.
