He's got one of the sweetest strokes on any court.

And he's one of the best in Hillsborough County.

Sam Chaffin burst on to the scene as a freshman at Wharton, reaching the state semis. That was only a sign of what was to come for the Wildcats junior.

"I feel like I've improved a lot over the years to now," Chaffin said. "Confidence and my attitude out on the court is the major improvement."

"He's at the top," Scott Ware, Wharton's coach, said. "He's had a couple of good kids out here, but he's probably in the top two or three in the county, if probably not beyond. The guy is phenomenal."

And at 10-1 this year, he's just getting started. Sam came to Wharton in 2010, one year after the Wildcats won three straight state titles.

His goal is simple: Put Wharton back on top.

"They talk about it all the time," Ware. "When we had tryouts, that's what they talked about. They want to get back and get Wharton's name back in the state contention and get us back there. There's a sign on this fence that says the state winners, and they see it every time they come out here to Hunter's green. Since day 1, that's all they've been talking about."
