Even though it’s a program accustomed to ending its season in Lakeland, Tampa Prep’s run to the Final Four this year might be its most improbable.

Yet, somehow, here they are again, vying for a state championship. The Terrapins advanced to the Class 3A title game with a 64-49 victory over Shorecrest in the state semifinals. It will be Tampa Prep’s fifth state championship game appearance and its first since they won it all in 2012. You can watch all of the action live only on BHSN Channel 47 or HD 1147 or stream it on bhsn.com.

Their title opponent, nationally ranked Sagemont, might provide a sobering reality check for the Terps. Coach Joe Fenlon said his team will have to change the way they play to counter all of the Division I talent on Sagemont’s roster.

But Tampa Prep brings a little something to the game. Actually it’s a big something. A 6-foot-9 something.

“I really believe Juwan (Durham) gives us a chance to compete (with Sagemont),” Fenlon said.

Durham was all over the court in Tampa Prep’s victory against Shorecrest. When he wasn’t stirring the crowd with one-handed dunks, he was hitting the short jumpers and rebounding and blocking. He finished with 25 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks.

Tampa Prep set an early tone, scoring eight-straight points (four from Durham) to open the game. Shorecrest didn’t hit their first shot until 2:38 remained in the first quarter. With the Chargers shooting only 2-of-11 in the first quarter, the Terps took a 14-6 lead into the second.

But Tampa Prep got a little careless in the second that allowed Shorecrest to creep into the game. A 6-0 run, started with three-straight free throws from Brady Grimm and capped off by Kent Kilgore’s three, pulled the Chargers within three.

The Terps responded with a 7-0 run, including four-straight points by Michael Fridella.

In the second half, Tampa Prep began pulling away. And every time the Chargers tried to chip away at their lead, the Terps responded. Late in the third, Aundre Fredericks three pointer cut Tampa Prep’s lead to six. Then Durham answered with a reverse dunk.

Grimm (17 points) and Marcus Blake (10) were the only Shorecrest players in double figures. In addition to Durham, Fridella added 21 points.
