Two points.

That's how close Lakewood was to reaching Orlando, and the Class 5A state championship game. That was the difference in their state semifinal loss, 40-38, to Green Cove Springs Clay, the difference in their season.

And nobody wants to forget it.

"Our motto, we're in the weight room every day, is two points," rising senior Tyrell Hubbard-Smith said. "We were two points away from going to the state championship game. Coaches just shout out two points, two points and that automatically takes everybody back."

This season, Lakewood is hungry for more.

"We did not reach our goal," Lakewood head coach Cory Moore said. "We have the motto of two points but one thing we did was we have two bricks in our locker room, one on top of the other. We have to be one brick better than last year."

Good news is, their star quarterback, Ryan Davis, is returning. He was the heart and soul of Lakewood's playoff run.

"I think Ryan is a very big part because he's balance," Moore said of Davis, who posted 2,024 passing yards, rushed for 856 and totaled 27 touchdowns last year. "He is balanced academically, on and off the field, and he's real consisent. He's a leader."

Davis will have some help this year, with Boca Ciega transfer Saivion Smith - who is ineligible for spring due to the move - and athletes Sekendrick Biddens, Tyreik Hopkins and Romello Presely at his disposal.

Lakewood has reloaded with talent, now they're hoping to achive their goal of making history and becoming Pinellas County's first-ever state title winner.

"This season, we have to be one brick better," Moore said, "if we want to build us a championship team."
