Vince Carter has transformed the landscape of basketball in Central Florida, single handedly put Volusia County on the college recruiting radar and is one to never forget his roots.

Now two decades after winning a state title with the Mainland Buccaneers he continues a journey home every year to teach youngsters life lessons through the game he loves.

“I enjoy teaching," Carter said. "I think with the game of basketball and just life in general being watered down—the young men and women—adolescents if you would—with the lack of knowledge for life or how to prepare for life and sports its needed so I still have the hunger each and every year to teach them."

Abby Steele is just one product of the camp she's a West Virginia native who spends her summers in Daytona with her family—it’s there where she first met Vince.

“I saw it on television on a commercial back when it was at the Ocean Center 16-17 years ago and I wasn’t even old enough to be in an age group and my parents saw that I was so excited for it and I wanted to go so they called and I ended up being able to go and it was just life changing so I’ve never stopped coming,” Steele explained.

Steele is now a student at Marshall University studying physical therapy and continues her involvement in the academy every summer.
