Tampa Catholic senior Devan Barrett owns the distinction as one of the most coveted running backs in the nation.

A lot of colleges wanted him and one SEC school snagged him.

Barrett announced his commitment to the Auburn Tigers in the BHSN studio on Thursday.

The four-star running back had narrowed his lengthy offer field down to five – Auburn, Florida, FSU, Notre Dame and Tennessee. After discussing his recruiting process, how he reached a final five, Barrett made his announcement.

He reached down and put on an Auburn visor, making his verbal commitment to the Tigers. Barrett said he chose Auburn because it felt most like home.

“I’ll be playing my next four years of college football and getting my education at Auburn University,” Barrett said. “It just felt like family at Auburn. All the coaches made me feel like I was at home. So I just thought Auburn was the best choice.”

Of his top five, Barrett said each program provided everything he wanted. So picking Auburn came down to a comfort level. He was most comfortable with the Tigers.

Last season, Barrett rushed for 1,891 yards and 21 touchdowns. He emerged as one of the Bay Area’s top offensive weapons.

Barrett said Auburn has a lot of plans for him in their offense.

“They said the I-formation, spread formation and backfield,” he said. “And then they said they’d square me out wide too at slot wide receiver.”
