The Florida State Women’s Basketball program was recognized on Monday as student-athletes Leticia Romero and Shakayla Thomas earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America honors.
The recognition is significant for both players. Romero becomes the first Seminole to be named a three-time All-American, earning AP honors in 2015 and WBCA honors in 2016. Thomas joins past Seminoles Adut Bulgak (2015 & 2016), Sue Galkantas (1981 & 1983), Natasha Howard (2011 & 2014) as well as Romero in earning multiple All-America honors.
Thomas has enjoyed another outstanding season with Florida State. She averages a team-best 15.1 points with six rebounds while shooting 49.6 percent (209-of-421) from the floor. The Sylacauga, Ala., native became the first Seminole to earn ACC Player of the Year honors, and recently was selected as a WBCA All-Region honoree alongside Romero.
Thomas is putting together a slew of strong performances when it matters most in the NCAA postseason. In three NCAA Tournament games, she has recorded three double-doubles while averaging 18.3 points and 12.0 rebounds. In the NCAA Second Round win over Missouri, she produced 20 points and 11 rebounds, then added 12 points and 11 boards in FSU’s NCAA Sweet 16 win over Oregon State.
Romero, a Canary Islands native, is quite possibly the most efficient offensive performer in women’s college basketball. She averages 12.4 points, shoots 50.6 percent (137-of-271) from the floor, 51.9 percent (55-of-106) from 3-point range and 89.6 percent (69-of-77) from the free throw line. She is an All-ACC First Team performer who is coming off a big 18-point, five-rebound performance vs. Oregon State.
College basketball’s only returning Olympic medalist is averaging 14.7 points and shooting 53.1 percent (17-of-32) overall in her three NCAA postseason games this year.
No. 3 seed Florida State is looking to make its first NCAA Women’s Final Four appearance as it plays No. 1 seed South Carolina in the NCAA Elite Eight on Monday evening at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The game will air live on ESPN from Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif.
