The Boy Scouts are working to raise awareness of hunger in Central Florida.

  • Boy Scouts hope to collect 600,000 lbs. of food
  • Scouts to donate to Second harvest Food Bank, local pantries

This week, the Scouts placed 600,000-door hangers on area homes, asking residents to place non-perishable items on their doorstep for pick up at a later date — it has called their “Scouting for Food” initiative.

Food bank leaders say with the impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria, they really need the help.

"We are not out of the fight yet we are still very much in disaster relief mode because all of our neighbors from Puerto Rico are coming in now, and we are helping to support them however we can," said Sasha Hausman, director of Philanthropy at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

The Boy Scouts will collect the food left on doorsteps on Saturday, Nov. 11, and donate it to Second Harvest Food Bank and other local food pantries.

Their goal is to bring in 600,000 pounds of food.
