How harmful algal blooms like Red Tide develop will now be studied high above Earth from the International Space Station.

The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space will work with the Naval Research Laboratory to use advanced imaging technology for the study.

The blooms affect coastal regions around the world including the Indian River Lagoon right in Brevard County, where marine life is consistently dying.

Red Tide stems from harmful toxins released into the water from rapidly growing algae.

The special imager on the ISS will allow scientists to develop a more reliable process to detect and classify the blooms.

A $250,000 grant has been awarded for the research.
