The Riverview woman stabbed and shot by her husband in front of their children Thursday morning has died.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Michelle Dukes died late Thursday night at Tampa General Hospital as a result of her injuries.

The incident started Thursday just after 7 a.m. when Michelle Dukes, 34, was stabbed by her husband in the throat at their home in the 800 block of Van Fleet Road.

The couple's three daughters, ages 7, 13, and 14, were waiting in a car to go to school when their mother ran out of the home with a stab wound, authorities said. As she ran to a neighbor's home, her husband Keith Dukes, 48, ran after her with his gun, shooting her once.

Deputies say Keith Dukes also pointed his gun at two neighbors who came out of their homes. The gun jammed when Dukes tried to fire at him, neighbor Frank Breden said.

Michelle Dukes managed to make it into one neighbor's home, followed by her three children. The girls were covered in their mother's blood, authorities said.

"The daughter came running after the husband had shot the wife," Breden said. "She brought me the gun, handed me off the gun I put it in my back pocket."

Keith Dukes ran and tried to escape in the Alafia River. Deputies pulled him out and took him into custody.

The original charge of attempted second-degree murder with a weapon has been upgraded to second-degree murder with a weapon.

Keith Dukes is currently is in the Hillsborough County Jail. He will be held without bond until his pre-trial detention hearing, which is set for Feb. 17.

Dukes did not say anything during his arraignment hearing Friday morning.
