Hillsborough County workers are providing assistance to those who are still cleaning up from Hurricane Irma.

  • Food, water, toiletries provided for many
  • County workers visited impacted areas Friday

Many who live near the Alafia River were flooded out of their homes after the storm two weeks ago.

"All of my stuff got ruined," said resident Erica Zaferis.

On Friday, county officials joined forces with American Red Cross and Feeding Tampa Bay to provide some relief.

Representatives drove to the affected neighborhoods in Lithia to give out boxes of food, gallons of water, and bags of toiletries.

Residents appreciated the support.

"It helped us a lot," said Samantha Witlock, who had to throw her food away when the power went out.

"I think it's awesome because we still need help,” said Kathleen Autry, whose home was flooded. "People around us still don't have water. A lot of people still need help and assistance. So they’re going to need help with a lot of things, not just food and water but a lot of things."

Officials said some residents who were impacted by the storm have never asked for assistance before.

That's why the county initially set up booths at the FishHawk Sports Complex. Representatives from Affordable Housing, Homeless Services and Code Enforcement were there to answer questions about the resources available.

However, when only a handful of residents showed up for help Friday morning, county workers decided to drive to the impacted areas to reach out to those who may need help.
