An animal rescue in Hernando County is helping dozens of shelters affected by Hurricane Irma get food to feed their animals.

  • Kathi's K9's in Weeki Wachee distributed dog food to shelters
  • Nearly 3,000 bags of food dropped off for shelters
  • Goal is to get the food to 501c3 shelters, county shelters

It was a busy morning Monday as volunteers helped unload pallet after pallet of dog food. This is the second truckload of food that's been brought into Hernando County.

It's all thanks to Kathi Johnson, president of Kathi's K9s in Weeki Wachee.  They're an affiliate with GreaterGood and were asked to take and distribute the donated food to shelters affected by Hurricane Irma.

"A couple of the shelters that have contacted me have stated that their roofs have been gone which means that their dog food was destroyed which means that they're begging for their communities for assistance with dog food for their existing dogs but they've been affected so it's just a catch 22, " Johnson said.

Nearly 3,000 bags of dog food have been dropped off at Town Square Mall ready to go to shelters in need.

The rescue’s goal is to get the food to 501c3 shelters as well as county shelters in the state north of State Road 70.

Town Square Mall gave some space to store all the food, and Flagstone Pavers provided equipment to help move the pallets.

"We're so grateful we have a community of business people who care about the animals,” Joanne Schoch, with Kathi’s K9s, said.

Kathi said they already have some shelters lined up to receive some of the food, but they are still looking for others.

They hope that when shelters get this food, it will make it a bit easier for them to rebuild and begin getting things back to normal.

Kathi said any shelters in need can contact Kathi's K9s to coordinate picking up some of the food. She can be reached at 352-596-1214.
