  • Spokeswoman said tips led to officer response
  • Suspect fled but was caught, police say
  • Angelo Dante Beckford, 40, in custody

Officers responded Monday afternoon to 524 16th Ave S. after receiving reports of a possible kidnapping. The area is in south St. Petersburg.

Citizens went to the police department to report that a man had a body stored in a house, according to spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez.

St. Petersburg Police took the man into custody when he fled from officers near the home. Police said he had cocaine with him.

He was identified as Angelo Dante Beckford, 40. He is currently charged with possession of cocaine, but police are still investigating.

"Apparently, according to the information we have, he was kind of showing off (the body) and it concerned (neighbors) enough that they came right to police headquarters to report it," Fernandez said.

Fernandez said Beckford had just been released from prison on April 1 for robbery with a deadly weapon.

"We were concerned that he might be holding somebody who was still alive," Fernandez said.

SWAT officers responded but then backed off so a search warrant could be obtained, Fernandez said.

Homicide investigators are now at the scene.
