TAMPA, Fla -- Hillsborough County authorities are now saying that a newborn baby originally reported found near a Tampa intersection was never abandoned, but instead dropped off at a hospital, according to a media release.

  • Mother, original complainant dropped off newborn
  • No charges pending
  • Case now a Florida Safe Haven case

Detectives reportedly learned in the course of investigating the case that the newborn was never left on the ground near a trash can, and the newborn's mother and the "original complainant" drove the baby to the hospital.

No charges are pending in the case, and officials said it is now considered a Florida Safe Haven case.

The newborn remains in critical but stable condition and is in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Family Services.

The original report

The case was initially opened when the original complainant told authorities he found the baby boy near 18th Street and 143rd Avenue at 5 p.m. and transported the baby to Florida Hospital on Fletcher Avenue.

Investigators were able to identify and then locate the child's mother overnight, then went about trying to uncover why the baby was supposedly abandoned.

"It's very hard," said Sheriff's Office Major Frank Losat at the outset of the investigation. "For some reason, someone chose this method to do this.

"They could've brought this baby to any of the fire stations, hospitals, they could have brought him to any law enforcement station, they could have even stopped a deputy on the side of the street and asked for help."

Officials issued a reminder that there are safe spaces to drop off newborns, including hospitals and fire stations.
