TAMPA, Fla. -- A group of local alumni penned an open letter to their alma mater, asking the school to condemn the actions of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Nielsen graduated from Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa in 1990.

In a letter signed by dozens of alumni, former students asked current Headmaster Joseph Seivold to condemn Nielsen's actions, as related to the separation of children from their families at the Mexican border.

"When you look at the things she has done and the consequences of these actions, you can't feel pride in that," said Richard Stull, class of 2012.

Stull said a link to the letter was sent to the headmaster on Tuesday, however alumni are still signing it.

Stull also said former students are donating to RAICES, an organization providing legal aid to immigrant families at the border, via an alumni GoFundMe page.

Berkeley Preparatory School's Director of Communications sent Spectrum Bay News 9 the following statement:

Berkeley Preparatory School is a diverse community comprised of many thousands of students, families, employees, alumni and alumni parents. The school is mission-driven to provide the best possible environment for the intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical development of each student, and to instill in them a strong sense of morality, ethics, and social responsibility. As a school, Berkeley's charge is not and cannot be to take a position on non-education-related governmental policy or action; it is to foster the confidence and build the critical thinking skills of our students so that they may do so.
