PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla -- A group of volunteers in Pinellas County is taking a personal approach to get people to vote in the midterm elections.

  • #BEAVOTER postcards arriving soon
  • "Freedom writers" are volunteers are of all ages
  • 3,000 postcards sent so far

“If you don’t usually vote in the midterms, this year it is too important to miss,” reads one of the #BEAVOTER handwritten postcards.

“What we’re doing is trying to get people out to vote in the primaries August 28th and the general election November 6th," said Jeanie McKnight, a Freedom Writers Volunteer.

The Freedom Writers group is made up of volunteers of all ages. Their goal is to reach out to voters with a personalized message.

Some of the volunteers are not old enough to vote, but they understand the importance of participating in the political process. They want to make sure the reminders get read, especially since it’s more of a personal approach and not a robo-call or printed pamphlet.

“I hope they read it instead of putting it into the trash can,” said 10-year-old volunteer Olivia Chin who was participating with her parents.

“I feel like I’m doing something to help with our democracy," said McKnight. "You know, it’s not just something you do every four years.”

So far, the group has sent more than 3,000 personalized postcards to voters across the Bay area. It’s a personal reminder from the group to each and every recipient of just how important their vote is to keep that democracy alive.

“Primary is August 28th and the general election is November 6th,” read the rest of one of the postcards. “Thanks, Beth.”
