TAMPA, Fla. -- A Bay area grandfather and grandson are forming an unbreakable bond over their common passion for helping people.

  • Maurice Youakim retired in 2000 but started volunteering
  • He performed eye surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital
  • His grandson, Daniel, wants to work in radiology

Since 1972, Maurice Youakim has considered St. Joseph's Hospital a second home.

"When I first came, the place was run by Sister Marie Celeste and she was a very nice person, very welcoming, so I always felt at home here," Youakim said.

For decades, Youakim performed eye surgery at the hospital. After retiring in 2000, he realized he wasn't ready to hang up his coat just yet. So, he started volunteering.

"I go out and talk to patients about Pastoral care at the chaplain's office," Youakim said.

Inspired by his dedication to his patients, his 16-year-old Grandson, Daniel, wanted to follow in his footsteps and help others.

"They're worried, they're sick, they don't know where they're going," said Daniel Youakim. "But I can see the relief when they know where they're going because it calms them down, and it's one less thing they have to worry about and that's a great feeling."

The soon to be high school junior has spent his summer volunteering in the radiology department. He hopes to one day make a career of it.

The grandfather and grandson said this experience has brought them closer.

"At home, we talk about our days. We talk about our days, it really brings us together," Daniel Youakim said.

"That's the most exciting thing, there's nothing like watching your children and grandchildren," Maurice Youakim said.
