PASCO COUNTY, Florida -- Nearly two months after one of Pasco County's famous stilt houses burned down, it's coming back to life.

  • The house was destroyed in a fire two months ago
  • The plan is to have the house completed in the next few weeks

Owners Greg and Brian Lake have put countless hours into rebuilding the house after a lightning strike destroyed it.

Though it's been many long days of hard work, each half-hour trip out to the house gets better.

"On Saturday, it was just a deck," Greg Lake said. "Now you're coming out and seeing the building. It's overwhelming, really cool."

The family was devastated when the house burned down in late August. With the help of friends and neighbors, the brothers started rebuilding it right away.

It's a lot harder to build on water than on land, meaning countless trips with building materials.

"You load the wood off the rack to the cart, from the cart to the trailer, from the trailer to the boat, from the boat to the deck, it's crazy," Greg Lake said.

"It's a long process," Brian Lake said. "It's not like you can just run to the store if you forget something. You have to head in with a boat and get people to meet you at the dock. It's a lot."

The original house was built 15 years ago, one of several stilt houses off the coast of Port Richey. It was one of the most well-known and photographed due to the American flag painted on either side.

"We're going to get the flag on the north and south side, that's the main thing. It's the flag house. It's going to go back the same way," Brian Lake said.

The brothers are hoping to have the house done in the next few weeks.
