HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — This entire week leading up to Veterans Day veterans in Hillsborough County will be lending a hand up to other veterans with limited income, repairing, restoring, and even constructing homes.

Maria Scott-Hunter, 72, watched Monday as Habitat for Humanity volunteers worked to spruce up her Brandon home.

"We're painting, we did a little bit of trash clean-up, we're cleaning up some chairs and tables for 'em," said volunteer and Army Reservist Master Sergeant Thomas Kent.

Maria has something in common with the volunteers. The Army veteran served twenty years.

"I was in from the Vietnam War to Desert Storm," said the former combat medic and lab technician.

The Army reservists volunteering their time to paint and landscape are all part of Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County’s Veterans Initiative.

"An initiative for Habitant Hillsborough to engage more veterans in the community through community service, but also we want to make sure that we’re servicing veterans in our community," said Veterans Initiative Coordinator Nitza Rivera, who is also a veteran.

"I like that," said Scott-Hunter. "It is special because it’s the type of people I was used to working with when I was in the military."

The initiative started in May. In an effort to serve those who served in time for Veterans Day, nearly 100 volunteers will work on eight veterans' homes in the eight-day Veterans Build service event.

"We take care of each other," Kent explained. "You know, and it’s so important when somebody needs help and especially if they, a lot of them are too proud to ask. So, when you see somebody that says, 'hey, can you give a hand to us?' Yeah, absolutely we’re going to do it."

"I’m happy about that, I really am," said Scott-Hunter.
