If dresses could talk, would these sequin numbers have some stories to tell.

  • Fashion archivist runs Albright Fashion Library in Beverly Hills
  • Library is favorite destination for celebs looking for gowns for red carpet
  • With 40 years of experience, she takes multiple trips to Paris every year

“There’s always a story behind each dress. Most have a story and most have good stories,” Irene Albright, founder of Albright Fashion Library, said.

That’s why this is a library, the Albright Fashion Library L.A., sitting majestically at the top of Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Estates Neighborhood. It's home to more than 6,000 high-end designs, and also home to Albright, who is a fashion archivist in addition to being the founder of the library.

When I ask who has worn her dresses, clearly it’s too many to list.

“Everybody,” she laughed.

This is more than a showroom. Celebrity stylists vie for appointments, not to just to be able to rent them for five days, but to have even just a minute with Albright, and her expert eye. It starts at the computer with stylists emailing Albright and her team about the mood a particular client wants.

“I can I.D. a person immediately. Know what they think they look great in and change that completely,” she said.

She’s been in the industry for 40 years and goes to Paris multiple times a year to buy new dresses.

“I’m selecting it just like I do a painting. I’m a big collector of art. Anything fabulous anything beautiful I collect,” she said.

She has the gowns everyone wants for awards season, for Albright, a time akin to bestsellers flying off the shelves.

“Everybody is racing. Everyone thinks they had something and then they’re not happy so they’re crazed,” she said.

You may think this massive collection could overwhelm some, but rather, it soothes. Albright can find something in here for you. Because her options are endless. Gucci, Tom Ford, Saint Laurent.

And then there are gowns yet to be worn, until this year's Oscars.

These stories have yet to be written.
