NATIONWIDE — Peter Tork, one of the members of 1960s TV musical group The Monkees, has died.

The announcement was made on his official Facebook page late Thursday morning.

"It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world," read the post on the Facebook page, which it said was managed by a team of Tork's friends, family and colleagues.

He turned 77 years old on February 13, according to IMDB.com.

Tork was a folk musician when selected to be one of the members of The Monkees, a made-for-TV musical group modeled after The Beatles. 

The Monkees went on to have three Billboard hits in 1966 and 1967: "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm A Believer" and "Daydream Believer" as well as four No. 1 albums. The TV show drew huge ratings for a short while but was canceled after two seasons.

Tork made 58 TV episodes, six albums, and a movie with the group, according to IMDB.com.

Tork's bandmate, British singer and actor Davy Jones, died in February 2012 in Florida at age 66.
