TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning's former general manager is headed back to Detroit, according to an ESPN report.

Steve Yzerman is returning to the Red Wings to be general manager. Yzerman played 22 seasons with the Red Wings (1983-2006), was a captain and won three Stanley Cups titles.

The Red Wings have called a news conference for 3 p.m.

Yzerman, 53, had served as the Lightning's GM from 2010 until he stepped down last September. He did remain with the team as an advisor.

Under his tenure, the Lightning became one of the stronger franchises in the NHL, advancing to the Stanley Cup finals in 2015 and three conference finals.

This year, Tampa Bay posted a league-best 62 wins this season but was swept out of the playoffs in the opening round by Columbus.
