TAMPA, Fla. — Around 2.3 million Floridians will hit the road for Memorial Day weekend in what could be the strongest kick-off to summer travel we've seen in more than a decade.

Decreasing gas prices and a strong economy seem to be the reason for more people hitting the road this weekend.

Gas prices today average $2.62 a gallon in Florida, and $2.55 a gallon in the Bay Area.

Mark Jenkins with AAA says the most heavily congested time will be Friday just before rush hour, and Monday afternoon into the early evening.

The good news is Florida will have its road rangers out in full force this weekend, along with the Florida Highway Patrol.

If you plan on drinking this weekend, don't forget AAA has its tow-to-go program available.

Air travel is also predicted to increase 3 percent this weekend, so make sure you plan some extra time to get to the airport.
