TAMPA, Fla. – Two orphaned Florida panther kittens are being cared for at ZooTampa at Lowry Park.

The kittens were brought to the zoo by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials after their mother's health began deteriorating.

The mother was suffering from an unknown neurological disorder and had to be euthanized.

"While veterinarians cannot predict to what degree the kittens may become affected, they are currently active, playful and healthy overall, Dr. Lara Cusack said in a statement.

Once the kittens are out of quarantine and cleared by the zoo's medical team, they will be put on public view as "ambassadors for their species." The kittens will remain at the zoo until a permanent home is found.

FWC hopes results from the mother's necropsy will help determine the cause of the disorder.
