Syracuse is making the move to 5G.

City lawmakers have approved a plan to build the cellular phone infrastructure, placing small cell towers on street lights throughout the city. Syracuse will be one of the first in the country with this type of system.

Mayor Ben Walsh called it an important step for the city.

“Syracuse is increasingly being seen as a technology leader across the nation and the world, and that will create growth and opportunity for people across the city,” Walsh said.

In recent meetings, some neighbors expressed health concerns with this type of system. Walsh said the agreement provides additional oversight and provisions to help protect city residents.
