If you’re in need of a good laugh, you should definitely check out American Stage in the Park’s production of the musical “The Producers.” It’s playing right now at Demens Landing Park.

  • Broadway producer tries to create biggest flop in history
  • Show will play Wed. - Sun. at 8 p.m. until May 13

Based on the film, “The Producers,” it’s the Tony Award winning musical by Mel Brooks about producing a Broadway Show.

“I play sort of a down and out Broadway producer who is known for really nothing but putting on flops,” Matthew McGee, who plays one of the main characters Max Bialystock, said.

An accountant then suggests that McGee’s character could make more money with a flop than a hit, and they set out to produce the biggest flop in Broadway history.

“It’s an equal opportunity offender. It doesn’t take itself very seriously. It’s absolutely not politically correct. And I think in a time like this right now when people are somewhat divided and all we talk about is how people feel about politics or how people feel about social issues, "The Producers" is exactly what everyone needs to sort of come together and just laugh at sort of the absurdity of life,” McGee said.

American Stage Theater has been putting on shows in the park like this for over 30 years. The company is made up of actors from around the Bay area and beyond, putting their own spin on this popular show.

“Using Matthew and some of the local actors that perform a lot around here give us that fresh take that we knew we were going to get right away in rehearsal,” Choreographer Shain Stroff said.

“Just the vibe out here with this show is just going to hit like gangbusters, we’re going to have a great time,” Stroff added.

The show will be playing Wednesday through Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. until May 13.

The show does have some mature content so parental guidance is suggested.
