TAMPA, Fla. -- A 73-year-old woman was killed Monday when she was struck by a vehicle in the Northdale area of Tampa.

  • Susan Henninger, 73, struck by vehicle in Carrollwood
  • Driver, 76, may have had medical emergency
  • Crash remains under investigation

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Susan Henninger, 73, and her husband were walking on the sidewalk along Northdale Boulevard when they were struck by a Honda Accord coming out of the Bob Sierra YMCA parking lot.

Deputies said the driver of the Honda, Gita Hadler, 76, lost control of the car, struck Henninger and then crashed into a tree. Investigators think she may have had some type of medical emergency just before the crash.

The force of the impact threw Henninger into a parking lot. Her husband incurred minor injuries.

Both Henninger and Hadler were taken to St Joseph's Hospital after the crash, deputies said. Henninger died at the hospital.

Hadler is listed in stable condition.

The crash shut down the intersection for several hours.
