BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — An animal rescue in Brooksville is giving back after it was hit by thieves.

Ziggy's Legacy Rescue posted on Facebook that dozens of their animal crates had been stolen.

Now, thanks to the community and in just a matter of days, they have even more crates than they had to begin with.

"It's overwhelming," said Many Figarola with Ziggy's Legacy Rescue.

The hallway of ASAP Animal clinic in Brooksville was lined with all the donated crates. New ones are constantly coming in, even during an interview with Spectrum Bay News 9.

"We've probably received three times this much since last Thursday," Figarola explained.

Sometime last Wednesday night, Figarola said someone stole all their crates they had stored behind the clinic.

"We use these for transporting from shelters. We use the smaller ones if we're trying to keep puppies warm if we have orphan puppies," she explained.

"It's sad. I felt bad that somebody felt the need to steal," she added.

Without the crates, helping the animals they care for is difficult.

But the community stepped in to help, something Figarola said they've seen before.

"We don't take monetary donations but whenever I post a need for towels, we get bags and bags and bags of towels. We're very lucky," she said.

"You know something that made me feel sad turned into something really wonderful," she added.

The rescue is now working with Hernando County Animal Services and other local rescues to get some of the extra crates they received to others who need them.
