NATIONWIDE - As the year ends, many travel reward deadlines are coming up.

What You Need To Know

  • Travel rewards are up, but you can’t travel

  • CDC recommended to postpone yearend traveling

  • Airlines and hotels extending deadlines, while credit card rewards need a plan

But in a year when you can't travel easily or traveling takes much more planning, what can you do about the soon to expire rewards?

The CDC recently suggested to postpone travel in an alert late last week.

This puts your timeline to use up any travel rewards by year's end in jeopardy.

Luckily for frequent flyers, airlines are extending their deadlines into next year.

For example, Southwest Airlines which is one of the highest volume carriers in the country and certainly one of the busiest at Tampa International Airport, extended benefits through June 30, 2021 for Companion Pass holders.

For A-list and A-list Preferred, Southwest is extending earned status through December of next year.

Each airline has their own policy on these extended deadlines.

Hotels are also extending their deadlines to use rewards into next year.

For credit cards, it'll be a bit tougher figure out what to do with rewards facing a deadline.

Consumer finance site Value Penguin posted an article on what to do with your rewards during a pandemic.

One recommendation on credit card travel rewards is transferring to bank points instead.

These are credit cards that have a bank affiliate.

Value Penguin suggested they're more stable and at times can be cashed for gift cards or credits on your statement.

Credit card rewards could also be donated to charity, although these donations are not tax deductible.
