POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper escaped serious injury early Monday when his cruiser was struck by a drunk driver.

According to authorities, the crash happened at U.S. 98 and Florida Avenue as the trooper was responding to another crash in Lakeland.

Officials said the 20-year-old driver of a Hyundai Accent, Jesus Eduardo Cano Zamora, ran a red light and struck the trooper as he was making a left turn.

The 51-year-old trooper suffered minor injuries.

Zamora, who also had minor injuries, is facing charges of DUI, driving without a license and possessing open containers of alcohol.
