The popular Clearwater Beach spot Shephard's Beach Resort is about to get a lot larger in size.

Work has begun on an expansion project that will double the size of the waterfront hotel and bar. The facility also includes a restaurant and nightclub.

Construction on the Gulfview Boulevard resort is scheduled to take about a year.

According to Bay News 9's partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, the project will tear down the current two-story hotel building and pool on the east side of the property and replace it with a new eight-story, 7,000-square hotel building and pool.

The upgrade will add 93 hotel rooms and an additional parking garage.

Hotel officials said the current facility will remain open during construction.
