A 9-year-old boy was killed and his mother and brother were seriously injured after getting hit by a car while walking their dog this morning.

The accident happened on Bahia Loop at Turf Drive in Land O' Lakes at 7:45 a.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 21-year-old John Ryals was traveling westbound on Bahia Loop approaching Turf Drive when Anita Pallares and her two sons were walking their dog eastbound on Bahia Loop along the north edge of the roadway.

Troopers said Ryals didn’t see the family and hit them.

Pallares, 33, and Jorge Cruz, 9, were transported to Bayonet Point Hospital where Jorge later died from his injuries.

David Cruz, 7, was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The dog was killed.

Neighbor Andres Garcia lives in the neighborhood and said he is in shock after the incident.

"I couldn't believe it, it's a small kid, a small life," said Garcia. "He was outgoing kid, just always wanted to play."

Garcia said he heard Pallares' cries.

"The mom was screaming," said Garcia. "He hit us, and the boy was laying down without movement."

Principal of Pine View Elementary, Kay Coe, said Jorge Cruz was everyone's friend.

"Well liked, very sweet, he would do anything for anybody," said Coe.

Officials said driver was ticketed for careless driving.
