  • Incident occurred Monday when he was picked up by Uber driver
  • Jose Aguirre plans to quit job after assault

"In your mind, you don't think it's going to right there happen to you," he said.

Aguirre picked up passenger Anderson Carter on Monday evening in Bradenton.

Carter was smoking something out of a pen tube. Aguirre claims police told him they thought it could have been spice.

Eventually, he said Carter grabbed his phone, canceled the Uber trip, and told him not to stop or else.

"Yeah, 'Don't stop or I’ll stab you,' you know? I'm like, 'Oh great,'" Aguirre said. "He got my umbrella and started taking it apart and taking the spikes out."

Aguirre said they drove for about an hour, with Carter continuing his threats to kill him if he stopped.

At one point, he claims Carter punched him.

"You know when your body turns warm and you know you're in deep trouble? It was like that feeling. My mind was like, 'I’m probably going to die today,'" Aguirre said.

As he drove down Whitfield Avenue, he spotted a parked police car.

It was fate -- Aguirre said the police officer later told him it was the first time he’d ever stopped to patrol in that area.

Aguirre said he took the chance and jumped out of his truck as it was still moving.

"I told the cop, 'This guy is threatening me to kill me, man! Get him!'"

Carter then hopped in the driver's seat and sped off, according to police.

A police report shows he crashed multiple times, finally ending up in a pond.

He was tased when he tried to run away.

He now faces multiple felonies, including carjacking, battery, and resisting arrest.

Aguirre had only been driving for Uber for about a month, but said he now plans on quitting.

He now has a message for other rideshare drivers.

"If you're going to do this, just be safe or tell yourself is it worth it?" he said.

Uber sent out a statement on the incident saying, "What's been reported is very troubling and we've reached out to the driver to check-in on his well-being. The rider no longer has access to the app."

A company spokesperson said Uber is deeple committed to the safety of drivers on the Uber app. They plan to work with the driver to help him file an insurance claim.

"We have insurance in place to cover driver-partners and riders through a third party insurance company. We are reaching out to those involved and are gathering information," a spokesperson said.
