ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg police are trying to determine what led up to a man being killed behind the wheel of his car Monday night.

According to authorities, a man's body was found in a vehicle after a crash in the 100 block of 38th Street North. The man has been identified as 29-year-old Derrick L. Williams, Jr. 

Police said a call came from someone in a nearby house who heard a crash and saw a driver slumped over in a grey sedan. 

When police officers arrived, the car's engine was still running and Williams was dead. Police said the man had been shot. 

"We're still talking to all of the witnesses in this area," said St. Pete Police Spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez. "To get a better idea of what led up to that."

Officials have not said where Williams was shot or any details of the shooting. 

The shooting remains under investigation.
