  • Shots fired in 2900 block of Goodrich Ave

According to Sarasota police, firefighters reported being shot at after responding to a call in the 2900 block of Goodrich Avenue at 4 a.m.

There were no injuries reported.

Officials said when crews responded to the home on Goodrich Ave, they were told by the resident at the address that they did not call.

While returning to their ambulance, an unknown person, last seen wearing a hoodie, fired one shot at the ambulance.

Both paramedics were able to get back into the ambulance and drive away during which time several more shots, approximately 3 to 5, were fired at the ambulance.

"Our unit did what they were supposed to do, which is immediately left the scene as quickly as possible so that they were uninjured," said Sarasota County Fire Department Chief Michael Regnier.

"These two paramedics were driving out here to a call for service," Regnier said. "They thought they were going to be rendering aid to someone in need — what they were confronted with was an individual that meant to do them harm."

The unknown subject fled on foot and has not been located at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.  Anyone with any information is asked to call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-316-1199. Tips can be reported anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 941-366-TIPS.

"A shooting like this, any time that one of our first responders is assaulted or shot at, it is a big deal," said Deputy Chief Pat Robinson. "That's not just an assault on the individuals that were driving that truck, the department as a whole, but all first responders and truly that's an assault on the community."
