Florida Highway Patrol says Gary Gogolowski, 73, was struck in the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 301, near Naylor Lane in Zephyrhills, around 11:30 p.m.

About half an hour later, Zephyrhills police responded to a disturbance and took a woman into custody under the Baker Act. They say the woman confessed to the hit-and-run.

FHP says the car used in the crash was found at a property on Naylor Lane that was owned by the woman's family.

Troopers say Gogolowski's pickup truck was found nearby. They believe his truck broke down and he was either standing or walking in a southbound lane of Highway 301 when he was struck.

Troopers say the woman was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash. Charges are considered pending as the investigation continues.
