LAKELAND, Fla. — The Florida Fire Chiefs' Association said Friday it will not conduct a review of a November fire in Lakeland that claimed the life of a 76-year-old woman.

In a letter to Polk County Manager Jim Freeman, the executive director of the Fire Chiefs' Association said a review would be "outside our scope."

"Therefore, we must decline your request to conduct said peer review," said Florida Fire Chiefs' Association Executive Director Ray Colburn.

Lorretta Pickard died in the fire on Rockridge Road. Crews at the scene concluded it was too dangerous for them to get inside Pickard's log cabin-style home.

The county had said Thursday that the Chiefs' Association would, in fact, review what happened in the November fire.

Colburn said there was no agreement between the association and Polk County government.
