MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Residents who plan to travel over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge should take note of a traffic alert and weekend event.

The Skyway 10K is being held this weekend.

Now in its second year, Skyway 10K officials say runners and visitors can expect improvements and changes from last year's run.

The Skyway 10K Expo will be held Saturday at Tropicana Field, with a free concert and festivities throughout the day.

The race will be held Sunday and will shut down the northbound lanes of the Skyway from 3:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Organizers say they learned a lot in the event’s first year. For this year's race, they've redesigned bus corrals, there is a new parking plan at the Trop to help ease congestion, and they opened up registration to an additional 1,000 runners.

"Logistically, it's one of the most challenging — if not the most challenging — races in the country," said James Judge. "And that's because you also have to bus 8,000 people down and bring them back in a very short period of time."

One hundred percent of event proceeds will go directly to the Armed Forces Family Foundation. Last year, more than $500,000 was raised, and officials say they want to surpass that this year.
