ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — What modifications make an Indy Car street legal for a fun jaunt off the race track?

For the crew in town to froth up excitement for the upcoming Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, it took things like headlights, break lights, and a blinker. They also added a horn and a strobe light atop the car to alert other vehicles because it sits so low to the ground.

This retired Indy Car is also stretched to carry a passenger behind the racecar driver.

Virginia Johnson sat behind driver Chase Crawford as they drove off the downtown St. Petersburg Track and headed into traffic.

Onlookers said first they heard the roar of the engine, and then they saw speed machine in a completely unfamiliar setting — in between civilian vehicles!

Crawford says reactions are the same wherever he goes.

“Everyone will stop what they’re doing pretty much and come take a photo or look at the car,” said Crawford.

The Grand Prix is March 8 - 10 along the streets of downtown St. Petersburg and a runway at Albert Whitted Aiport. It’s a 14-turn 1.8 mile track.
