Investigators determined that David Whitman, 47, went to the office, where his wife Anna, 42, is an employee, dragged her out of the building into the parking lot, and shot her at least three times.

Anna Whitman remains in critical condition at Bayfront Medical Center.

David Whitman returned to the couple's home and refused to leave. He was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement officers.

Many of Anna Whitman's co-workers witnessed the confrontation between Anna and her husband. Meanwhile, Anna's family said they are in complete shock over the incident.

Anna's mother Fay Robertson said the couple had been together most of their lives, saying they were high school sweethearts and have two adult children.

Robertson said she knew they were having marital problems but she never dreamed Davis would harm Anna.

"I’m not coping I don’t believe it because David’s always been there I don’t see this in him," Fay Robertson said. "At this point, there ain’t no way putting it back together until we know what’s going on with her.  It’s going ot be a hard road for her."

Fay Robertson said her daughter is a fighter and she's hoping she'll make a full recovery.

"I’ve never had any trouble with him," Robertson said of her son-in-law. "He’s always been there for us. My daughter is the hard rock of the whole family, she’s always been there for everybody and that’s why I don’t see him doing something like this.

"It’s crazy. It’s like I’m in shock, I don’t believe it until I go and see her again and it doesn’t look like my daughter laying there."
