CLEARWATER, Fla. — Clearwater police, along with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office, continues to investigate Saturday night's officer-involved shooting.

  • Man, 39, shot and killed by Clearwater officers Saturday night
  • 2 officers responded to call of man waving gun
  • Bryan Bernard Wallace died at Morton Plant Hospital

Officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of La Salle Street at 6:30 p.m. after a call about a man waving a gun  in a threatening manner in the area of a crowd. Officers arrived and searched the area for more than 30 minutes looking for the man but did not locate him at that time.

Just after 7 p.m., officers received additional information about the same man with a weapon.

Officers spotted Bryan Bernard Wallace, 39, in the area and approached him, giving commands. As they did, a gun fell from his waistband, officials said.

Wallace began to reach for the gun despite being given instructions to stop. In fear for their own safety and the safety of others in the area, the two officers then fired their weapons.

Wallace died after being taken to Morton Plant Hospital.

An investigation is ongoing.

The officers, Justin Buis and Michael Diaz, are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure. Both have been with the agency for a year.
