ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The old St. Petersburg Police Headquarters has seen better days since its original construction back in 1951.

  • Old St. Pete PD headquarters to be developed
  • Mayor Kriseman to choose from 7 proposals
  • Land to become an office space, living space, or hotel
  • Development to also have a parking garage

The city plans to tear down the old building and put up a new development, and Mayor Rick Kriseman has seven proposals to choose.

Each developer wants to build either an office space, a living space, a hotel, or a combination of all three.

The mayor's spokesman Ben Kirby said it'll all come down to which proposal is the best fit.

"The mayor has talked a lot about what St. Pete needs which is much needed office space, so something that might provide a little office space here or a lot of office spaces would be ideal. We've talked about parking as well," Kirby said.

In addition to the living, office, or hotel space, all the concepts propose a 500-700 car parking garage and retail space on the first floor.

"What our district wants is a 700 car parking garage. Half used for the neighborhood all the time and half used for the developer all the time. That would give us parking we need," Mark Ferguson, owner of Ferg's Sports Bar and Grill, said.

With new construction popping up all around the site, city officials say this is only the beginning.

"This old PD is just a natural part of that and you see where it's going, it's going towards the Tropicana Field site — that's the next big thing," Kirby said.

Mayor Kriseman is expected to make his selection early next month. Once an agreement is hammered out, it will go before city council for final approval.
