It's been a very long year for family and friends of Alek Smith, who was murdered in his Spring Hill home during a home invasion on Oct. 16, 2018. Smith was reportedly beat and shot to death by his assailants.

They gathered Sunday for a rally to generate awareness about the unsolved case. Smith's mother, Elizabeth Clark, insists that someone in the community knows something about what happened to her son.

"We just need them to come forward and say something, and almost a year has gone by and we’re still sitting in the same spot," Clark said. "And it’s hard to remain patient and to have hope when nobody’s talking."

Smith's girlfriend and daughter were in the home when the home invasion occurred. The girlfriend was injured, but Smith's daughter was not.

Anyone who might have information about this case is asked to call Detective Brian Stephens at 352-754-6830. To submit a tip anonymously, call Hernando County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-990-8477.
